Hail Storm Roof Repair

Baton Rouge Roofing | Ryson Roofing

When you think of roof damage or hail damage, you think of very obvious types of damage. Huge holes in the roof, missing shingles, a tree falling on a roof and the like. It is also common to associate tornadoes, strong wind and other severe weather as the cause of this type of damage. And while this may be true, there is another type of roof damage that is not so obvious. This damage is not so visible to the untrained eye and is caused by hail. Hail is a form of solid precipitation. It is usually possible in most thunderstorms and is produced by cumulonimbi. When hail hits the shingles the hailstones damage asphalt roof shingles by knocking their granular covering loose. Once enough granules are knocked off the shingles, the underlying asphalt is exposed. Then sunlight deteriorates the asphalt and water enters the house. That is why most insurance companies will replace an entire roof if they find at least ten nicks in the shingles in a ten square feet area.

You Decide Not To Replace Your Roof

For starters if you file a claim and do not replace your roof, you are out of your depreciation forever. And to make matters worse, when you do have real visible damage such as a leak that has now caused damage to your walls, furniture and electronics, you will more than likely be uninsured because you did not replace your roof. And if another storm comes along and blows your shingles off of your roof the insurance company is not going to pay for your roof a second time when you didn't replace it the first time.

You Decide Not To File A Claim

When hail strikes your area you should certainly call your insurance company and determine if you have damage. When damage exists in areas prone to storms your insurance company has calculated a replacement cost into your insurance premiums. When the storm hits your rates will go up and maybe even your deductible. You are actually paying higher insurance costs and not utilizing your insurance. To make matters worse you only have a certain amount of time to file a claim after a storm strikes. This time factor varies from state to state.
